Home School Connect

A service that provides secure access to your personal work space and other shared resources in school from any computer connected via broadband to the internet.

Broadband

An ADSL or Cable service capable of 512 Megabit or faster (router or ADSL modem connected) . Replaces the old-fashioned ‘Dial-up’ service.

Operating System

The ‘workhorse’ of your computer, for example:

  • Windows 95 (archaic, certainly incompatible with Home School Connect)
  • Windows 98 (outdated, likely to be very problematic for Home School Connect).
  • Windows Millennium (ditched by Microsoft; incompatible with Home School Connect ).
  • Windows XP (mainstay of home computing, compatible with Home School Connect).
  • Windows Vista (the ‘in-bet weeny’ problematic with Home School Connect).
  • Windows 7 (new, very nice, currently some issues with Home School Connect).
  • Apple Mac (may work with Home School Connect, needs special changes; see here).
  • Linux (Compatibility status unknown; see here for more details).

Microsoft:

  • Internet Explorer 5 & 6 (outdated, works with Home School Connect, changes required).
  • Internet Explorer 7 (mainstay, works with Home School Connect, ).
  • Internet Explorer 8 (latest , works with Home School Connect, minimum change).

Mozilla:

  • Firefox (works with Home School Connect, minimum change).

Apple Mac:

  • Safari (compatibility status unknown)

Application Compatibility

The interaction of one program or document with another, for Example:

  • An old Microsoft Office 2000 program would not be able to open a newer Microsoft Office 2007 document.
  • The Microsoft Office 2007 program cannot open an Open Office document; However the Open Office program is able to open an Office 2007 document.
